Seattle seniors and teens connect through gardening program

Every Tuesday, Maria showed the teens how to save seeds from her prize-winning tomatoes.

She showed them how to gently squeeze the seeds from the ripe flesh into small paper envelopes. Then, each teen carefully labeled the envelopes with the tomato variety and date. Later that afternoon, she showed Marcus how to stake the young Celebrity plants; his large hands moved slowly at first, then more surely as she guided him. Another student, Elena, worked alongside Mrs. Sato, snipping off yellowing leaves from the basil. The Lettuce Link program pairs teens like Marcus and Elena with senior gardeners across the city. Now, several of Maria’s tomato varieties appear in other gardens around Seattle, started from those saved seeds.

Maria is happy knowing her shared knowledge and careful work helped to feed so many in the city, one seedling at a time.
